Yup, you guessed it. Halloween! We've got a ton of great programs scheduled starting tomorrow and extending throughout the next week.

In addition, we have some other super exciting programs!

Door Decorating Contest: Who has the most Halloween spirit in 13th Street?? Show off your decorating skills by Monday, October 29th and you and your roommates could each win a movie ticket! Categories are Best Door, Scariest Door, and Most Creative Door.

PREGAME: Join the RAs in the lounge at 8:30 to put together your party kits for a night out! We will have snacks and tips for spending a night out on the town safely.

Bake Sale: The RAs have been working on a series of civic engagement programs for this semester, kicking off with a Halloween Bake Sale. Donate what you can, learn about how other cultures celebrate Halloween, and enjoy a sweet treat while helping to support a child in need. Over the course of November and December, we will be raising money to purchase gifts and other needed items for several children, to be donated at Christmas. This is your first opportunity to start helping out! Treats will be on sale in the lobby.

Costume Contest: Think you have what it takes? Join Hall Council in the lounge at 7:00 pm to show off your scariest and most creative disguises! Winners get a pair of movie tickets!

Be safe. Happy Halloween!

Laundry Tips and Tricks

Good morning 13th Street!

There have been lots of questions and some complaints about the washing machines. The last time a repairman was out to take a look, I asked what we can do to make the machines break less, and he gave me a couple important tips and tricks:

-- Use High Efficiency detergent. Almost every brand makes one! Look for this logo:
-- Less is more. You only need about two tablespoons of HE detergent for a full load.

-- Don't overload the machines with clothing, sheets, etc. If it takes a few pushes to get the door to click shut, there's too much stuff in it. Filling it 3/4 of the way is your best bet.

-- Leave the doors open after you remove your clothes. This not only signals to other laundry-goers that the machine is no longer in use, but also lets the machine dry properly (or as much as possible between loads) so that it doesn't start to smell funny.

-- Feel inside the gasket around the door to double check if anything has fallen out of your pockets during the cycle. Pens, lip balm, cash, and spare change are the easiest to forget in pockets. I speak from experience.

Hope this helps!

Trash Chutes

The trash chutes are now open! Please use them for any non-recyclable garbage that fits in the mouth of the chute. If a bag or an item doesn't fit, don't force it, just pile it at the top of the ramp on the first floor by the lounge. Also, try to recycle! We're big on being green here at 13th Street, so if it's cardboard or bottles or glass and recyclable, put it in a recycling bin!

Happy Monday!
